Three Measurements in the Smallest Space:
STCC4 and SHT4x for Indoor Air Monitoring

Kombination aus SENSIRION STCC4 und SHT4x Sensoren als Raumluftlösung

Measuring CO₂ where there has hardly been any space for it before? The SENSIRION STCC4 makes it possible, measuring just 4 × 3 × 1.2 mm.

However, its compact design alone is not enough for comprehensive indoor air monitoring. To obtain a meaningful picture of the indoor climate, temperature and relative humidity are just as important as CO₂ concentration.

This is where the combination of the SENSIRION STCC4 and SHT4x becomes particularly interesting. By adding the temperature and humidity sensor, which measures only 1.5 × 1.5 × 0.5 mm, the three key indoor air parameters — CO₂, temperature, and relative humidity — can be measured in an extremely compact space.

With an average supply current of just 950 µA for the STCC4, the combination is also well suited for compact, energy-efficient, and battery-powered applications.

More measurement data while also creating better conditions for CO₂ measurement

For developers, the benefit is not only the ability to measure three relevant environmental parameters with a compact sensor solution. Space requirements, power consumption, and cost are equally important factors when making a design decision.

This is exactly where the combination of the STCC4 and SHT4x demonstrates its strengths: both sensors require very little space, making them particularly suitable for compact and energy-efficient applications. At the same time, temperature and humidity provide important environmental information that the STCC4 automatically uses for precise compensation of the CO₂ readings.

The result is a well-matched two-sensor approach for applications in which measurement functionality, space requirements, energy efficiency, and cost all play an equally important role in the development process.

Optimize accuracy or cost? – The choice is yours.

Depending on your application requirements, you can select the appropriate temperature and humidity accuracy within the SHT4x family. This allows the STCC4 to be flexibly combined with the sensor that best matches the desired accuracy level and cost target of the respective design.

For example, if your application requires high accuracy, the SHT45 offers performance of up to ±1% RH and ±0.1 °C. If, on the other hand, a particularly cost-optimized solution is the priority, the SHT41 can be an attractive alternative. This allows you to tailor the sensor solution specifically to your application requirements.

In summary, you benefit from six key advantages:

  1. Three relevant indoor air parameters with just two compact sensors
  2. Minimal PCB space requirements
  3. Temperature and humidity data for compensating the CO₂ measurement
  4. Easy integration via I²C
  5. The right sensor variant depending on your accuracy and cost targets
  6. Also suitable for energy-efficient and battery-powered designs

From the first measurement to your own design, faster

The SEK-STCC4 is available for evaluation. Together with the SEK-SensorBridge, measurement data can be conveniently analyzed on a PC. This allows you to assess at an early stage how the sensor combination performs under the conditions of your application before finalizing the hardware design.

Conclusion

Compact, energy-efficient, and cost-conscious: the STCC4 enables CO₂ measurement even in applications where there was previously simply not enough space or budget. This opens up new possibilities for applications such as smart thermostats, air quality monitors, HVAC systems, building automation, and battery-powered sensors.
