NVIS – When Displays Understand the Night
Imagine this: a pilot flying at low altitude at night.
No stray light must interfere with night vision equipment, and every piece of information in the cockpit must be clearly visible. A display that is too bright can cause glare—and in that moment, become more of a risk than a help. This is exactly where NVIS (Night Vision Imaging System) comes into play.
The Challenge
Modern displays are becoming increasingly powerful for bright sunlight conditions. Typical brightness levels today range from 1000 to 1500 cd/m². But there is an opposite, equally critical use case: displays must also be reliably usable in darkness.
Here, brightness levels below 10 cd/m² are required to ensure content can be perceived comfortably and without glare. Conventional displays with white LED backlights reach their limits:
- Extremely low brightness levels are often not cleanly achievable via PWM dimming
- White LEDs emit a broad spectrum, including infrared components
- This radiation can interfere with night vision devices and dazzle the user
The Solution: NVIS
NVIS-capable displays from our partner EDT feature innovative backlight technology specifically designed for use with night vision systems. These displays avoid interfering infrared components, reduce glare and blooming, and ensure clear readability—even in complete darkness.
What makes an NVIS display special?
Conventional displays emit radiation in the 600 to 1000 nm range. This can cause unwanted effects in night vision devices, such as blooming (halo effects), ghosting (reflections), as well as reduced image quality and visibility. NVIS displays, on the other hand, are designed to prevent these effects and therefore do not interfere with the performance of night vision systems.
How does NVIS work?
The principle is as simple as it is effective. An NVIS display uses two separate backlights:
- Day mode: A classic white/bluish backlight with high brightness for outdoor use
- NVIS mode: For example, green light (NVIS Green Class A/B) with extremely low brightness (5–10 cd/m²) and reduced power consumption
It is important to note that each lighting system has its own dedicated backlight driver. Switching between day and night mode is flexible and seamless.
As a standard product, GLYN currently offers a 10.1" NVIS display (green) under the part number EVME101000VDYW*K0.
The standard display uses NVIS Green B Class A LEDs, meeting the requirements for both NVIS Class A and Class B. This version is already compliant with MIL-STD-3009, the military standard defining NVIS system requirements—particularly in aviation.
Typical Applications
NVIS displays are used wherever light becomes a critical factor, such as in military & defense, aviation, marine environments, as well as hunting and forestry equipment.
Conclusion
If your displays need to perform flawlessly not only in daylight but also in darkness, NVIS is essential.
