LVGL on Embedded Linux –
The New Freedom for Industrial User Interfaces

LVGL auf Embedded Linux - HMI Ansicht

What only a few years ago was reserved for high-end systems is now expected in industrial environments. User interfaces impress with smooth animations. Touch operation is as intuitive as on a smartphone. Even integrated video and 3D functionality make device control easier.

Many projects face the challenge of implementing a powerful GUI easily and without complex software overhead.

That’s reason enough for us to show you what is possible today with modern embedded hardware. To do so, we created a powerful GUI demo by “marrying” a Ka-Ro QSMP-25 computer-on-module with a 12.1-inch EDT display from the 13D series.

Our goal was more than just a technical showcase. We wanted to answer a key question from our customers: “What does a modern industrial user interface on this platform actually look like?”

Why LVGL on Embedded Linux?
As a hardware distributor, our focus is naturally on high-performance components. At the same time, we see rapidly increasing demands for user interfaces in industrial environments: intuitive, smooth, visually appealing—yet still efficient.

This is where LVGL (Light and Versatile Graphics Library) comes into play. LVGL is an open-source framework specifically designed for embedded systems. In our demo, the GUI runs directly on Embedded Linux—without a traditional desktop environment. This offers several key advantages:

  • Resource efficiency: No overhead from window managers or desktop stacks
  • Fast system startup: Ideal for industrial devices with defined boot behavior
  • Direct hardware control: Optimal use of GPU, video, and touch capabilities
  • Seamless integration: Easy to integrate into existing Linux systems

Our application demonstrates impressively what can be achieved with this combination:

Intuitive touch interaction: Swiping, tapping, and smooth transitions just like in consumer devices—the entire interface is optimized for touch.

Integrated video playback: Videos are played directly within the GUI, without the need for external players or complex workarounds.

Real-time 3D graphics: An interactive 3D model in glTF format is rendered live. Users can rotate, zoom, and switch between models in real time.

Built-in application logic: With an integrated mini-game (tic-tac-toe against an AI opponent), we demonstrate that even complex application logic can run easily on the same platform.

Benefits for Industrial Customers
LVGL on Embedded Linux offers clear added value, especially in industrial environments:

  • Scalability across platforms: Once developed, GUIs can be reused from low-cost systems to high-end processors.
  • Future-proof software: Hardware changes no longer require a complete redesign of the interface.
  • Shorter development times: A unified framework, a large community, and numerous ready-made UI components accelerate development.
  • Modern look & feel: Industrial HMIs can now be visually compelling—without compromising performance.
  • Full system control: Achieve your goals without relying on complex GUI stacks or proprietary solutions.

Why Start with GLYN-SUPPORT?
Technology alone is not enough. What matters is how quickly and reliably you can turn it into a product. With GLYN-SUPPORT, we offer more than just components:

  • End-to-end system expertise: We understand both hardware and its interaction with software stacks like LVGL and Linux.
  • Faster project kick-off: Pre-evaluated combinations of modules, displays, and software reduce your time-to-market.
  • Hands-on consulting: No theory—only solutions we have built, tested, and optimized ourselves.
  • Long-term partnership: From the initial idea to mass production, we support your project every step of the way.

What’s the Key Takeaway?
Our demo makes it clear: powerful, modern GUIs—including video and 3D—can now be realized in industrial environments without compromise.

With the Ka-Ro QSMP-25, the EDT display, and LVGL on Embedded Linux, you have a platform that excels both technically and economically. And with GLYN-SUPPORT, we ensure that you can quickly and reliably bring this potential into your application.
