Off to New Spheres: Into the Future With Gen 5 PCIe SSDs!

PCIe von Xmore

The fastest possible data transfers with SSDs -
There's simply no getting round PCIe technology!

  • What exactly is PCIe?
  • What are the advantages of the Gen 5 version?

In this article, we will show you how you can utilise all the possibilities of the latest PCIe generations with GLYN SUPPORT.

Peripheral Component Interconnect Express® (PCIe) is a high-speed interface standard that is used to connect various internal components in a host system. Communication takes place via the so-called PCIe lanes. These are data lanes that enable data to be exchanged between different components of a computer. The more PCIe lanes a component has, the more data can be transferred simultaneously. This can improve the performance and speed of a system.

Key features

The most important features of PCIe include high-speed data transfer, scalability, full-duplex communication, point-to-point architecture, backward compatibility and versatility. Common uses of PCIe include the connection of graphics cards, network cards and other expansion cards in addition to the connection of SSDs.

Over the years, PCIe has gone through several generations, each offering significant improvements in speed and efficiency:

PCIe Gen1:
Introduced with a data rate of 250 MB/s per lane.

PCIe Gen2:
Doubled the data rate per lane to 500 MB/s.

However: As Gen1 and Gen2 were inferior to S-ATA II and III products in terms of performance, PCIe Gen3 products were the first to find their way into the storage market.

PCIe Gen3:
Increased the data rate per lane to ~1 GB/s.

PCIe Gen4:
Further increase in data rate to ~2 GB/s per lane.

PCIe Gen5:
The latest development with a data rate of ~4 GB/s per lane, expected to be available in Xmore® products from the fourth quarter of 2024.

PCIe Gen3:
A reliable workhorse

PCIe Gen3, introduced in 2010, offered a data rate of ~1 GB/s per lane, doubling the bandwidth of Gen2. This generation became the standard for many years and provided reliable performance for a variety of applications such as gaming, data centres and high performance computing. Although these products are still readily available on the market, they are only suitable for a new design in exceptional cases. Here you have to compromise on long-term availability.

PCIe Gen4:
Doubling the speed

PCIe Gen4, which was introduced in 2017, doubled the data rate per lane to ~2 GB/s. This significant jump enabled faster data transfer rates and benefited applications that require high throughput, such as 4K video editing or high constant performance for large data transfers in industrial applications.

PCIe Gen5:
Unleashing the future

The upcoming PCIe Gen5, which is expected to be introduced in Xmore® products in the fourth quarter of 2024, will bring a further leap in performance with a data rate of ~4 GB/s per lane. This generation promises to revolutionise data-intensive applications and offers several advantages:

  • Incredible speed: With a data rate of ~4 GB/s per lane, PCIe Gen5 delivers unprecedented data transfer rates and doubles the bandwidth of Gen4. This is particularly beneficial for applications such as machine learning and AI, 24/7 data recording and 4k / 8K video processing.
  • Improved lanes: PCIe Gen5 supports up to 16 lanes and offers a theoretical total bandwidth of 64 GB/s. This enormous bandwidth is crucial for multi-GPU setups, high-speed networking and advanced storage solutions.
  • Improved thermal and power efficiency: PCIe Gen5 is designed to better manage thermal and power efficiency than previous generations. This is achieved through advanced manufacturing processes and an optimised power supply that ensures stable performance even under heavy workloads.
  • Future-proof: Investing in PCIe Gen5 technology ensures that your systems are ready for future developments and support the next wave of high-performance components and applications.

PCIe Gen5 represents a significant advance in the development of the latest high-speed storage products, offering unrivalled speed, efficiency and future-proofing.

At Xmore®, we are committed to bringing you the best innovations and look forward to working with you to take the performance of your devices to the next level.
