When a display module with touch is integrated into the application, the front-mounted decorative panel shows black printing around the edges. The display's viewing area (VA) has a greyish appearance when it is switched off.

Wouldn't it be nice if the touch display could be integrated ‘invisibly’ into the complete application design, like the infotainment system in your car, for example?

An elegant, perfect black surface. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and beauty is valued alongside ease of use and aesthetics.

EDT has developed its ‘All-Black Effect Solution’ for this challenge, which you can use to implement TFTs with touch in black. Compare previous solutions (left) with the new EDT development (right) in the picture.

Seamless black creates a very homogeneous appearance, which also makes the product look more high-quality and beautiful, and you can create product differentiation, increasing customers' desire to buy.

The CIELAB colour space, also known as L*a*b*, is a colour space defined by the International Commission on Illumination (abbreviated CIE) in 1976. It expresses colour in three values: L* for lightness, and a* and b* for the four distinct colours of human vision: red, green, blue and yellow.

Over time, the CIE has developed other improved colour difference formulas, including the colour distance ΔE, which is calculated from the L*a*b* values of two colours. (Wikipedia)

The All Black Effect in EDT displays does not affect the selection of the LCD, the touch panel or the cover plate in any way.

The advantages of the all-black effect for you in summary:

  • The homogenous appearance makes the display look more aesthetic and of higher quality, exquisite product design
  • Reflections are reduced, both through the full-optical bonding and the introduction of the additional film
  • Reduction of the visibility of the touch sensors (sensor pattern)
  • Free choice of LCD, touch and decorative film
  • Colour difference with EDT ΔE ≤ 1, thus no longer visible to the human eye
  • Customer-specific adaptations of individual components possible from a MOQ of 1,000

 

The following restrictions should be noted:

The All Black Effect absorbs approx. 50% of the brightness and is therefore not suitable for every application. To achieve the same brightness as in the standard version, more electricity (more energy) is therefore required.

Fields of application and structure

The fields of application for All-Black Display include automotive, railway applications, home automation and similar applications.

The structure corresponds to that of a ‘normal’ display with a cover lens and full-optical bonding, i.e. a liquid adhesive (adhesive layer) is used between the LCD and touch, as well as between the touch and cover lens.

The All-Black Effect is created by adding an optical film over the touch sensor. This film is almost completely black, but still allows enough light from the backlight to pass through.
