Bluetooth

Bluetooth

Originally developed for the wireless connection of cell phones and peripheral devices, Bluetooth quickly established itself as the standard for radio connections over short distances. The communication range of many devices is usually a few meters. With correspondingly powerful variants, several 100 meters are also possible.

Bluetooth allows bidirectional transmission of voice, audio and data between devices.

With Bluetooth Low Energy, the technology has been further optimized to enable devices with lower power consumption. A major advantage of Bluetooth wireless technology is the high level of interoperability with devices from different manufacturers thanks to standardized application profiles. This makes it easy to use commercially available cell phones or tablet PCs to control devices.

With Bluetooth Mesh, a protocol variant is available for extended wireless networks by automatically routing and forwarding data via several nodes to the destination node. This enables applications such as sensor networks or home and building automation.

Bluetooth uses radio in the 2.4 GHz frequency band and can thus be used worldwide.

Pre-certified Bluetooth modules already contain additional required components such as crystals, RF matching and internal antenna or connector. This enables quick and easy integration of Bluetooth into own applications.

Alternatively System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions for Bluetooth are also available, combining radio transceiver and a microcontroller into a single compact package. These allow more flexible and tailored application designs.

For simple applications, ready-made adapters with RS-232 or USB interface are also available.
