First fine dust sensor with MCERTS certification
The SPS30 from SENSIRION is the first fine dust sensor for the mass market with MCRTS certification for its performance.
The certification further attests that the SPS30 can be easily integrated into applications that must comply with the European air quality standard DIN EN 15267.
The MCERTS certification programme was created by the UK Environment Agency and is based on international and European standards. This programme ensures high quality monitoring of environmental data.
Meets the stringent DIN EN 15267 standard
The SPS30 has been proven in laboratory and field tests to meet the latest MCERTS and associated European air quality standards according to DIN EN 15267.
Compliance with the above standards requires low variability within the model (≤ 5 µg/m3). This makes the SPS30 the first choice for integration in applications that require high precision.
Certification is carried out by "Sira Certification Service", one of the leading notified bodies in Europe, accredited to ISO/IEC 17065 UKAS and a member of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA Group).
Patented pollution resistance technology
The performance of the SPS30 fine dust sensor is based on the measuring principle of precise detection of scattered laser light. The patented contamination resistance technology in combination with high-quality and durable components enables accurate measurements right from the first start-up. And this over a long service life of more than eight years.
Besides CO2, fine dust is an important indicator of air hygiene.
What fine dust particles do to the human body
Fine dust is differentiated according to its size and divided into so-called size fractions:
- PM10: particles with a maximum diameter of 10 µm
- PM2.5: Particles with a maximum diameter of 2.5 µm
- Ultrafine particles with a diameter of less than 0.1 µm
PM10 particles can reach our nasal cavity, PM2.5 can reach the bronchial tubes and ultrafine particles can even reach the lung tissue and the bloodstream. The effects of fine particles on health vary depending on how large they are and how deeply they penetrate the body. Over time, they cause lung diseases such as bronchitis or asthma and contribute to cardiovascular disease.
Strict particulate matter limits must be observed
Limit values for the fine dust fraction PM10 have been in force in the EU since 2005. The daily limit is 50 µg/m3. This may not be exceeded more than 35 times a year. The permissible annual mean value is 40 µg/m3.
For the even smaller particles PM2.5, the limit value is 25 µg/m3 as an annual average.
Since 1 January 2015, this limit must be complied with.
Since 1 January 2020, the annual mean values for PM2.5 particulate matter may no longer exceed 20 µg/m3.
The "subtle" difference between laser and LED technology
In optical fine dust sensors, the light scattering of the particles to be measured is detected. The basic structure consists of a light source and a detector for the scattered light.
This is why the fine dust sensor works so precisely:
The SPS30 uses a laser light source and the latest algorithms to measure the mass concentration (µg/m³) and the quantity concentration (particle number/cm³) of the following particles.
Mass concentration: PM1.0, PM2.5, PM4 and PM10
Mass concentration: PM0.5, PM1.0, PM2.5, PM4, PM10
The measurement with a sharply focused laser offers considerable advantages compared to similar products that only use an LED as a light source.
The size and number of individual particles can be detected accurately. This makes it possible to distinguish between size fractions.
Similar products use an LED as a light source. However, the light beam of LEDs far exceeds the particle size.
As a result, the signals of the individual particles add up and the particle size cannot be distinguished.
Maintenance-free long-term precision
Natural deposition of fine dust in conventional fine dust sensors leads to a steady deterioration of the signal quality.
Particularly critical are the deposits on all optical components such as the light source (laser or LED) and the photodetector.
As a result, equipment integrating these PM sensors will not function properly after some time, leading to malfunctions, user complaints, maintenance, service and/or replacement parts.

Quick start with evaluation kit
To get to know the possibilities of the SPS30, the evaluation kit SEK-SPS30 is also available immediately from the GLYN warehouse.
