MEMS ultrasonic time-of-flight sensors from TDK

TDK Chirp Microsystems has developed a high-quality 3D sensor technology. This is based on the sonar principle from the animal world and combines it with Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor technology.

The ToF ultrasonic sensors CH101 and CH201 are designed in a 3.5 x 3.5 x 1.26 mm 8-pin LGA package. The manufacturer combines a MEMS PMUT (Piezoelectric Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducer) with a power-efficient digital signal processor (DSP) ASIC.

In the industry, these are currently the only MEMS-based sonars on a chip the size of a mm.

Both sensors are capable of many functions and algorithms for processing ultrasonic signals. With the ToF ultrasonic sensors, distance measurement, presence and proximity sensing, object detection and avoidance, and position determination can be directly implemented.

Ranges from 4 cm up to 5 m
The range of the ToF ultrasonic sensors is from 4 cm to 5 m. The CH101 provides very accurate distance measurement to targets up to 1.2 m. The sensor's power consumption is an economical 12 µA to 50 µA with an accuracy of 1.0 mm RMS @ 30 cm.

The CH201 is particularly suitable for distance measurement up to 5 m at 14 µA to 247 µA power consumption. Its accuracy is 0.2 mm RMS @ 1 m. Both sensors operate in the industrial temperature range of -40 ºC to 85 ºC and have an I²C interface. The supply voltage is 1.8 V (1.62 V to 1.98 V). A single sensor can already support room-filling measurements, as the detection of objects lies within a field of view of up to 180°.

Ideal for social distancing and industrial applications
Targets of any nature can be detected in all lighting conditions. Even transparent/translucent objects such as glass are clearly detected. The colour or whether the target is transparent is also clearly detected. This makes the sensors ideal for obstacle avoidance, presence detection, robotics, security and surveillance, AR/VR, drones, liquid level detection, smart home/building and general IoT applications.

Simultaneous distance measurements to multiple objects
The sensor's wide Field of View (FoV) can be customised to allow simultaneous distance measurements to multiple objects within the FoV. These adjustments can be made with acoustic housing options.
