What's new with Bluetooth 4.2?
In the Bluetooth 4.2 specification, three brand new features for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE, also known as Bluetooth Smart) devices have been added.
Data Length Extension (DLE): DLE increases volumes of user data that can be transferred wirelessly in BLE data packets, from 27 bytes with Bluetooth 4.1 to 251 bytes with Bluetooth 4.2. This increase enables an up to 2.6 times higher throughput with Bluetooth 4.2 compared to Bluetooth 4.1.
Link Layer (LL) Privacy: With the privacy feature, a BLE device can change its address in short intervals to avoid being tracked. When using the Bluetooth 4.2 LL privacy features, power consumption is reduced. In addition, Bluetooth 4.2 enables BLE devices to change address every second, compared to once every 15 minutes with Bluetooth 4.1.
Low Energy (LE) Secure Connections: With Bluetooth 4.1, the keys for the encryption of communications are exchanged wirelessly. A hacker can intercept the keys and passively (e.g. via the monitor) listen to communications between two BLE devices. With Bluetooth 4.2 Secure Connections, the Diffie-Hellman key exchange protocol (Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman/ECDH algorithm) ensures that encryptions keys are generated and exchanged securely in accordance with Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS).
