Consumes only 1/3 of the energy of existing sensors:
Currently the most energy-efficient nine-axis motion sensor available
Battery-powered mobile applications can breathe a sigh of relief:
TDK InvenSense’s ICM-20948 is currently the most energy-efficient nine-axis motion sensor in the world. With power of just 2.5 mW, it consumes a mere 1/3 of the energy of existing solutions.
So it’s perfectly suitable for battery-powered mobile applications.
The QFN housing, which measures a mere 3 mm x 3 mm x 1 mm, is a multichip module consisting of two silicone chips. The first chip contains:
- 3-axis gyroscope
- 3-axis acceleration sensor
- Digital Motion Processor™ (DMP)
The second chip contains the 3-axis magnetometer.
Thanks to its high level of integration, the ICM-20948 cuts component costs.
At the same time, it also facilitates the qualification process and simplifies production.
For design flexibility, the gyroscope’s measurement range can be programmed in increments of ±250°/s, ±500°/s, ±1000°/s and ±2000°/s. The user-programmable acceleration range is ±2 g, ±4 g, ±8 g and ±16 g.
Data communication with an external microcontroller takes place via an I²C or SPI interface.
The Digital Motion Processor™ integrated in the ICM-20948 relieves the burden on the microcontroller since the motion algorithms are calculated independently. It therefore improves the overall system’s performance.
Further external sensors, such as a barometric pressure sensor, can be connected using an additional I²C interface.
Quick start with the DK-20948 development kit
The DK-20948 is a development kit for quick evaluation and development in relation to the ICM-20948.
The development kit has an on-board debugger. So there’s no need for additional external programming or debugging tools.
The development kit is supplied with the necessary software.
Included, you will find InvenSense Motion Link, a GUI-based development tool and the driver for the ICM-20948.
