USB type C is a new standard that will change how we use PCs and mobile phones in the future. 

Soon to be a thing of the past:

  • Currently, USB cables typically have a 20-year-old type A USB connection at one end and a wide type B USB connection at the other end. 
  • Another widespread USB cable, which is used for charging mobile phones (slow charging at 7.5 W) has a type A connector at one end and a thinner, micro-B connector at the end that connects to the mobile phone.

All these cables are now being replaced by the USB type C cable, which has the same thin type C connector at both ends for interchangeability. 

The type C connector is contactable on both sides and is always inserted the right way round thanks to its symmetrical design.

High charging current as for laptops
In addition to the physical differences of the USB type C cable, it also delivers more power thanks to its USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) specification. In USB-PD standard, a voltage source can supply a consumer with up to 100 W of power. 

The USB-PD standard also defines the application of the type C connector for other technology interfaces, such as DisplayPort and Thunderbolt. With these features, a single USB type C cable can be used to simultaneously transfer data, view data and deliver power.

To implement the USB-PD specification, a type C controller is required.
